You Are Not Suffering Alone . . .

Dr. Klionsky offers effective treatment for auto accident injuries, whiplash, and neck pain and provides alternative treatments to surgery for ruptured and herniated discs utilizing non-surgical spinal decompression.

Low back pain (LBP) has become one of the most significant medical problems in the United States today.
The latest statistic on back pain and sciatica (numbness, tingling, and pain radiating down the leg) show that LBP is affecting Americans in overwhelming numbers.

Back pain is one of the most frequent complaints during primary care office visits and statistics show that low back pain is one of the most common complaints presented to workers compensation.

Even though health care in the U.S. is widely regarded as the best in the world, the number of chronic back pain cases continues to grow each day and patient dissatisfaction with current treatments has rarely been more acute.

Millions of people, just like you, are in pain and searching for relief!

Unfortunately, many have given up on finding a real solution, turning to medication to cover up the pain.
Others have turned to back surgery out of desperation, sometimes ending up with less mobility and staggering hospital bills.

Many others are confused by the conflicting reports of quick fixes, gimmicks, and miracle cures, so they don’t do anything about their pain, leaving it to worsen over time, causing progressive damage.

Because the back is designed to be used, it will deteriorate without adequate mobility, much like an unused muscle can weaken and atrophy.

If you are like many who suffer from chronic back pain, you have probably tried several prescribed remedies to help ease your discomfort: frequent bed rest, high doses of pain medication, manipulation, flexion-extension or acupuncture.

Like so many, you may have come to accept the fact that you just have to learn to live with your pain.

Perhaps you are seriously considering surgery or you have had surgery, yet your pain persists.

Treating Low Back Pain With Chiropractic

Chiropractic treatment for low back pain is usually pretty straightforward.
Most commonly, it’s simply a matter of adjusting the lower lumbar vertebrae and pelvis to re-establish normal motion and position of your bones and joints.

Chiropractic for the low back has been repeatedly shown to be the most effective treatment for low back pain.
In fact, major studies have shown that chiropractic care is more effective, cheaper and has better long-term outcomes than any other treatment. This makes sense because chiropractic care is the only method of treatment that serves to re-establish normal vertebral motion and position in the spine.

All other treatments, such as muscle relaxants, pain killers and bed rest, only serve to decrease the symptoms of the problem and do not correct the problem itself.

How do you get started?

Contact our office at (561) 393-0054 to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Klionsky to determine your individual situation.

After carefully studying your case history and exam findings, Dr. Klionsky will sit down and explain his recommended plan of action for you. After answering any questions you may have about the recommended plan, you may begin your care.

Sciatica is a symptom caused by a disorder occurring in the lumbar spine.

The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in the body measuring three-quarters of an inch in diameter, about the diameter of a finger.
The sciatic nerve originates in the sacral plexus; a network of nerves in the low back (lumbosacral spine).

The lumbosacral spine refers to the lumbar spine and the sacrum combined. The sciatic nerve and its nerve branches enable movement and feeling (motor and sensory functions) in the thigh, knee, calf, ankle, foot and toes.

The sciatic nerve and the lumbosacral spine is pictured below.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

• Pain in the rear or leg that is worse when sitting
• Burning or tingling down the leg
• Weakness, numbness or difficulty moving the leg or foot
• A constant pain on one side of the rear
• A shooting pain that makes it difficult to stand up

Sciatica usually affects only one side of the lower body. Often, the pain extends from the lower back all the way through the back of the thigh and down through the leg.

Depending on where the sciatic nerve is affected, the pain may also extend to the foot or toes.
For some people, the pain from sciatica can be severe and debilitating. For others, the pain from sciatica might be infrequent and irritating, but has the potential to get worse.

What causes sciatica?

Any condition that causes irritation to the sciatic nerve can cause the pain associated with sciatica. In many cases, sciatica is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve from a herniated disc (also called a slipped disc or ruptured disc). Additional common causes of sciatica include:

• lumbar spinal stenosis (narrowing of spinal canal in the lower back)
• degenerative disc disease (breakdown of discs, which act as cushions between the vertebrae)
• spondylolisthesis (a condition in which one vertebra slips forward over another one)

If Sciatica is caused by a disc bulge or disc herniation, Spinal Decompression can help.

Healthy Disc:

All discs of the spine receive nourishment through blood vessels until approximately the age of 20. At this point, the disc has been adequately filled with a lifetime supply of blood, fluid, and nourishment.

Normal activities and exercises allow the discs to make that supply of nourishment last a lifetime. Through aging and with normal wear and tear, we use the nourishment and we all experience a slow degeneration of the discs of the spine.

This is normal aging. The more “stress” you put on the disc, the more you use up the nourishment, weakening and deteriorating the disc, creating a problem.

The normal healthy disc, looks like a “jelly-donut.” It has a tough outer ring called the “annulus fibrosis” and a soft middle called the “nucleus pulposis.”

One of the amazing benefits of Spinal Decompression is that it heightens the disc space, and is seen to return it to normal size and function.

Bulging Disc

The jelly-like substance is prone to injury and the most common situation causing problems is one that puts pressure on the disc. The pressure causes the jelly material inside the disc to “bulge” or “slip” out of place.

As this occurs, the bulge itself puts pressure on other structures near the disc like the nerves. That’s how bulging discs cause pressure to build up on the nerve.

Herniated discs

Herniated discs are also often referred to as “ruptured discs.” A disc can bulge without herniating.

When the jelly-like nucleus pulposis is under pressure, it can bulge. But, when the pressure is excessive, it can herniate (rupture) through the outer band called the annulus fibrosis.

As the “herniated” disc material spills out, a portion can press on a nerve, causing pain and accompanying radiation and weakness of the muscles involved.

However, common sites are the lumbar (lower back) and cervical (neck) spine.

Degenerative discs in the mid-back (thoracic) are uncommon.

X-ray findings of degenerative discs show narrower disc spaces and some osteophyte (bony outgrowth of spur) formation. As we age, these changes tend to appear on the X-rays of most men and women.

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) will usually detect degenerative discs, before x-rays can diagnose them. Loss of water content (hydration) in the invertebral disc is usually the first finding, which is followed by narrowing of the disc space.

People in their 20′s and 30′s may already have changes to their discs but there is usually no associated symptoms.

As the aging process continues, the occurrence of degenerative discs increases.

In the early phases of degenerative discs, small tears, degeneration, fibrosis, and collapse of the disc may lead to failure of mechanical function.

This is associated with low back pain and possible leg pain (sciatica) if there is any nerve root impingement (radiculopathy).

As disc degeneration continues, there is soft tissue buckling, lipping and spurring which can cause narrowing of the space for the spinal cord and nerve roots. Lumbar spinal stenosis is the actual narrowing of the spinal canal and foramina (small channels) to the extent of compression of the lumbosacral nerve roots or cauda equina.

Lumbar stenosis is caused primarily by degenerative disease of the spine. However, a congenitally narrow or small spinal canal is a common finding; when present, it requires less disc degeneration, smaller disc herniation, or osteophytes to cause symptoms.

Causes and Risk Factors of Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative disc disease can result from injury (either acute or chronic/repetitive), infection, or the natural processes of aging. It has been referred to as the “grey hairs of the spine.”

Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease

The process of degeneration of the spine may lead to local pain, stiffness, and restricted activity.

If there is disc herniation or rupture, there may also be leg/groin/knee pain dependent upon which nerve root is affected.

Treatment of Degenerative Disc Disease

Spinal decompression has been an alternative treatment method for those suffering from degenerative disc disease. You first must determine if you are a candidate for spinal decompression.

Many people have found success in treating their condition using spinal decompression.

How do you get started?

Because of this we have the highest rate of chronic, degenerative disease ever.

To settle for treatment focused on pain relief only, leaves the part of the body that is not working properly to undergo continued wear and tear: arthritis, degenerative joint disease, among many other chronic, degenerative diseases.

At Boca Spine & Acupuncture Centers, Dr. Klionsky and his staff are devoted to helping patients get better.

Chiropractic care to optimize health

The purpose of chiropractic care is to optimize health. Because chiropractic treatments are primarily applied to the spinal region, many individuals incorrectly assume that chiropractors treat only back and neck ailments.

While we do quickly and effectively eliminate back pain and neck pain, it’s not the only goal. In fact, we also treat extremities such as hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, feet, ankles, knees and hips.

You may be wondering… how can the same chiropractic treatment which effectively treats my back pain also optimize my health? The answer can be found by looking into the relationship between the spine and the nervous system.

As you may already know, the nervous system is the master controller of all living cells, tissues, glands and organs; orchestrating and coordinating all cellular functions. The spinal column encases the nervous system (spinal cord and nerve roots) and is responsible for its protection.

Because of this intimate relationship, biomechanical and structural problems in the spinal column can irritate parts of the enclosed nervous system. This irritation can result from noxious inflammatory biochemicals released during tissue injury or may result from direct mechanical pressure. In either case, the functioning of the nervous system is negatively influenced as is the functioning of the cells, tissues and organs which are supplied by the affected nerve(s).

The resulting ailment(s) depends on the cells, tissues and organs affected as well as the extent of nervous system compromise.

In short, because the body’s innate recuperative powers are affected by and integrated through the nervous system, correcting spinal abnormalities which irritate the nervous system can lead to a number of favorable results in patients suffering from various, seemingly non-spinal health conditions.

Short-term and regular chiropractic care has a number of benefits including:

* spinal and extremity pain relief

* headache relief

* increased mobility and range of motion

* decreased stiffness and muscular spasms

* arthritic joint pain relief

* increased joint health

* increased performance and energy

* increased sense of well being and relaxation

* increased balance and coordination

* reduced degeneration and risk of injury

* enhanced tissue healing

* decreased tissue inflammation

One of the newest and biggest developments in chiropractic care is called “Chiropractic Rehab.”

Chiropractic Rehab (SRT – Strength Restoration Therapy) is taking chiropractic care to the next level when it comes to pain relief and stabilization.

It combines modern chiropractic techniques with effective progressive rehabilitation therapies.

Chiropractic Rehab (Strength and Rehabilitation Therapy) is an improvement in treatment that is designed to get you feeling better again and maintain the health you achieve.

When it’s medically appropriate, your plan of care will include both a chiropractic adjustment (or spinal decompression) and then Chiropractic Rehab (SRT) to “cement” the adjustment in place.

It’s typically not enough just to do an adjustment. The surrounding muscle and tissue must be “rehabilitated” to support the spine and the adjustment. A customized therapy plan will be designed for you by Dr. Klionsky.

The proper combination of the chiropractic adjustment and Chiropractic Rehab (SRT) can increase the effectiveness of your correction and help to prevent relapses. This is because, in addition to skeletal misalignments, the muscle and connective tissues surrounding and supporting the bone can be strained or out of place as a result of misuse and poor skeletal alignment.

Specially designed exercises, stretches and other therapeutic procedures can help your body stay in balance and on the road to pain-free, healthy living.
